Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's women's soccer team received its first loss at home Friday afternoon when it fell to USC 2-1. For the first time this season the Gaels couldn't hang onto its early 1-0 lead, as the Trojans tacked on one in each half to earn the victory. With the loss, SMC falls to 7-3 while USC improves to 5-3-1.
USC midfielder Rosa Anna Tantillo broke up the 1-1 tie in the 66th minute for the game-winning goal. Tantillo ran onto a long ball played by Jocelyn Leche which setup a one-on-one opportunity that she was able to slip by Gael goalkeeper Andrea Lee.
The Gaels struck first for eighth time this season. In the 19th minute, McKenna Belzer received a long boot pass from Lee at the right corner of the penalty area. Belzer was able to turn and bend the shot far post around USC goalkeeper Veronica Simonton. The goal marked her fourth of the season.
Six minutes later the Trojans were able to tie the game at one. In the 25th minute, forward Tracy Lansing volleyed a Leche pass into the right corner to put USC on the board.
Offensively, the Trojans out-shot the Gaels 21-10. Genevieve Hollis and Belzer led the way for the Gaels with three shots a piece. Lee made some spectacular saves to keep the Gaels close. The newcomer recorded a career high 10 saves with six coming in the second half.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Sunday, September 26 when it hits the road to face Sacramento State. Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m. at the Hornet Soccer Field.
