Sacramento, CA- Sophomore midfielder Sarah Churchill scored the lone Saint Mary's goal as the women's soccer team shutout Sacramento State 1-0 Sunday afternoon from Hornet Soccer Field. The victory improves the Gaels' overall record to 8-3, while the Hornets fall to 2-8.
In the 34th minute Sarah Churchill broke up the scoreless tie when she received a pass from Joelle Gizzi off an indirect kick. Churchill beat Hornet goalkeeper Michelle Balzouman in the lower right post to give the Gaels the 1-0 lead.
The goal proved to be all the Gaels would need as the SMC defense did the rest. Freshman goalkeeper Andrea Lee recorded her fourth individual shutout on the season after making three saves on the afternoon.
Offensively, the Gaels out-shot the Hornets 11-9. Saint Mary's was led by Genevieve Hollis, Danielle Shank and Gizzi, with two shots a piece. Both of Shank's shots were on goal while Hollis and Gizzi each had one shot on goal as well.
Leading the way for the Hornets was Linda Sanchez, who recorded three shots on the afternoon. Balzouman recorded the loss while making two saves. Balzouman split time with Britanny Auernig who recorded three saves.
Saint Mary's will return to action on Sunday, October 3 when it travels to Palo Alto to face the No. 20-ranked Stanford Cardinal. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. from Maloney Field.
