
Golf in Second Place of Nexus Naples Intercollegiate Invitational

NAPLES, FL - The first day of competition for the Lexus Naples Intercollegiate Invitational was held today at Hammock Bay Golf and Country Club in Naples, FL, the Saint Mary's golf team is in second place following two rounds of play. In the 12-team event, the Gaels shot a second round tournament low score of 283, and is currently two shots behind Baylor in the team competition.
Liam Kendregan fired back-to-back sub par rounds of 69 and 70 respectively, and is currently in second place in the individual field, three shots behind Portland's Mike McCabe who leads the way at 8-under par, 136. Kendregan's 69 in the opening round was the only score under par for the Gaels after 18 holes.
Joshua Kelley and Joe Lanza shot opening rounds of 73 and Mike McRae's 75 gave SMC a team total of 290 after 18 holes. Chadd Cocco, after shooting 76 in the first round, led the Gaels with a 69 in the afternoon. Cocco holed a 60-foot eagle put on the 17th en route to a 3-under round.
Kendregan's second round 70 and McRae's 1-under 71 in the afternoon helped the Gaels post a score of 283 in the afternoon session, the lowest second round total of the 12 schools in the tournament. Kelley's 1-over par 73 was the final score used for SMC in the second round, as the Gaels shot five-under par, and closed into within two shots on Baylor. Lanza's second round score of 74 (+2) went unused.
The Gaels will complete the Lexus Naples Intercollegiate Invitational with the third round on Tuesday morning at the 6,834-yard, par 72 Hammock Bay Golf and Country Club.
