After opening the season with four straight wins and ranked third in the county, the Bruins dropped their first game of the season to No. 4 Penn State, 1-0, in double overtime on Sept. 9. Two days later, UCLA rebounded to defeat Colorado 2-0. This season, UCLA has posted wins over #25 San Diego (4-1) and #14 Princeton (1-0). SMC VERSUS UCLA; THE SERIES
When SMC and UCLA meet on Sunday, it will mark the third ever meeting between the two schools. UCLA has won both games played in the series. UCLA posted a 2-0 win in the first game played in 1995, then collected a 1-0 overtime victory in 2003. Sunday's game will mark the first game played at Saint Mary's in the series.
LOOKING BACK AT LAST WEEK
In the 2005 SMC Fall Soccer Classic, Saint Mary's posted a 1-1 record following a 1-0 overtime loss to SMU and a 2-0 victory over No. 24 Dartmouth on Sunday. SMU scored the game-winning goal late in the first overtime period, handing SMC its second loss of the young season. Two days later, the Gaels responded by beating a ranked opponent for the first time this season. Gen Hollis scored both goals for SMC, marking her second and third scores of the season. The shutout of Dartmouth marked the third of the season for Saint Mary's.
THIRD-YEAR HEAD COACH Paul Sapsford
Paul Sapsford is in his third season as head coach of the Saint Mary's women's soccer program. Sapsford holds a 20-22-3 record at SMC, following a 1-1 record last week. He led the Gaels to an 8-12 record in 2004 and an 8-8-3 mark in 2003. Following a one-year stint as the co-head coach at Stanford, his Division I career record stands at 38-23-3. In 2002 at Stanford, Soccer America named Sapsford co-Coach of the Year, after leading the Cardinal to the NCAA Quarterfinals and a 21-2 overall record, marking the best record in the program's history.
