Moraga, CA - The 2007-08 season will mark the 100th year in the history of men's basketball at Saint Mary's College. To recognize the 100 years of basketball, Saint Mary's will release the top-25 players of the last century. Saint Mary's will countdown players 25 through 17 on the nine days counting down to the opening game of the year.
A two time All-WCAC selection, Erick Newman utilized his all around game to help lead the Gaels to a 44-14 record during his stay in Moraga. A San Francisco native, Newman was named city high school Player of the Year while at Riordan High. Before joining the Gaels, Newman was named a 1st Team All-American at Southern Idaho in 1987. That same year, his team claimed the Junior College National Championship. Upon transferring to Gaels, Newman's aggressive defense style wreaked havoc on opposing guards; he currently holds the Saint Mary's records for steals in a single season (72) and has the 4th most swipes for his career (126).
In addition to his defensive presence, Newman also excelled as a dependable scorer during his time in McKeon Pavilion. His eye popping career .599 field goal percentage in a Gaels uniform is the second highest total in the 100-year history of the program. Newman's fiery spirit and demeanor were backed up by outstanding all around numbers; he averaged 12.5 points, 6.1 rebounds, and just shy of three assists to go along with a Gael's best 2.3 steals per game in his career.
Newman was a renowned defensive force who was apt to break games open with sheer tenacity. Known as a fierce competitor who always "came to play," As a senior during the '88-89 season, Newman led the Gaels to a 25-5 record, good for 1st place finish in Conference and an NCAA tournament appearance. In that same year, Erick was honored as 1st team All-WCC.
Players 16-1 will be released at each home game during the season, with No. 16 being announced at halftime of the game between SMC and Sonoma State on November 9. The best player in the history of the program will be named at the Gaels' final home game of the season on February 25 when SMC hosts San Diego at 7 p.m.
