Women's Tennis To Battle Pepperdine for WCC Championship

Malibu, CA - The No. 58 ranked, and second seeded Saint Mary's women's tennis team advanced to the programs first ever West Coast Conference Tennis Championship final with a 4-1 win over the No. 62 ranked and three-seeded Loyola Marymount Lions on Saturday afternoon from Pepperdine University.
After dropping the doubles points, Saint Mary's won four straight singles matches to advance to the school's first ever appearance in the WCC Championship finals. The best finish for Saint Mary's in the 22 years of the WCC Championships is fourth place, which the Gaels have done nine times, most recently in 2005 and 2006.
Saint Mary's opened the day by dropping the doubles point 2-1. The doubles team of Nemke and Femke Strijbis defeated LMU's Erin Ivey and Bliss Nixon 8-4 at no. 2 doubles. The team of Jessica Hoath and Aude Lambert were defeated 8-4 at no. 1 doubles and Marah Calvo and Stef Ordoveza dropped the no. 3 doubles points 8-5
Trailing 1-0, Saint Mary's put the match away, and secured the programs best finish ever, by winning four of the six singles matches in straight sets. Ordoveza got the Gaels on the board with a 6-2, 6-3 win at no. 6 singles and Erin Young finished out Elnen de Villiers 6-1, 6-2 at no. 5.
Femke Strijbis gave the Gaels a 3-1 lead as she put away Tamara Tanner 6-2, 6-2 at no. 3. Marah Calvo earned SMC's match-winning fourth point as she improved her singles record to 19-1 overall, and 11-1 at no 4 singles with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Serena Fermin.
Saint Mary's will battle the no. 19 ranked Pepperdine Waves for the 2007 WCC Championship on Sunday. The match is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. at Pepperdine University.
