Sacramento, CA - The Saint Mary's men's soccer team got a goal from senior David Blanchard and that is all they would need as Brian Mason and company blanked Sacramento State 1-0 Friday afternoon. After the day, the Gaels move above .500 with a 3-2 mark on the season.
In a defensive battle where both team only got off five shots, it was the shot off the head of Blanchard that secured the victory.
On a free kick taken by sophomore Dylan Leslie, Blanchard used the back of his head to beat CSSU goalkeeper Nick Garguilo in the 76th minute.
The SMC defense kept the Hornets attack in check, enabling Brian Mason to earn his second shutout this season.
Junior Justin Kim led the Gaels with two shots. Fernando Cabadas led the host Hornets with two shots as well.
Mason made one save on the afternoon to secure his 15th career shutout. Garguilo made one save and allowed a goal in the losing effort.
Saint Mary's will continue its week this Sunday against San Jose State. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. from Saint Mary's Stadium.
