SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Saint Mary's men's soccer team fell 4-0 to No. 25 San Diego in its season finale Friday night. The Gaels rattled the crossbar in the 14th minute and even had a goal disallowed due to an offside call in the 32nd minute, but were unable to break through at Torero Stadium. Despite a scoreless first half, the Toreros found success with four second-half goals to record their tenth win of the season and secure the two-seed in the inaugural West Coast Conference Tournament. Luke Schaefer led the team with three shot attempts and two on frame while sophomore goalkeeper Tommy Davis recorded four saves over the final 45 minutes.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Saint Mary's went toe-to-toe and battled to a scoreless first half with No. 25 San Diego. The Toreros had eight shot attempts, but several half chances, as just one attempt was on target and forced an easy save from starting goalkeeper Sam Bentley. The Gaels had the most dangerous chance early on with a header attempt from freshman center back Max Owusu-Antwi that found the top of the crossbar after a long throw from Ryan Firestone in the 14th minute. Antwi lept well to get above the Torero defender and had his header attempt pop off the top of the crossbar to rattle the USD defense early on. Nearly 20 minutes later, Saint Mary's almost found the opening score but had a header goal from Cyrus Shafie was disallowed due to an offside call, keeping the game scoreless going into the half.
The second half was a different story though, as San Diego netted four goals to secure a 4-0 victory in its regular season finale. The Gaels did record seven shots and forced four saves in the half, but USD secured its tenth win of the season and will enter the West Coast Conference Tournament as the two-seed, facing off with three-seed Denver next week. Luke Schaefer led the Gaels with three shots and two on frame, while sophomore Tommy Davis came in to play the second half and recorded four saves.
