MSOC | Kobey Strikes for Fifth Goal of the Season but Gaels Fall 4-2 to Seattle U

SEATTLE U, Wash. - The Saint Mary's men's soccer team fell 4-2 to Seattle U (4-3-3, 1-0-1) Saturday night to end its Pacific Northwest road trip. The Gaels took a one-goal lead just four minutes into the match off a fabulous volley strike from sophomore midfielder Cameron Kobey. They maintained that lead at the break but the Redhawks found a way to net four second half goals including two within two minutes of each other to pull off the comeback and earn their first West Coast Conference win of the season. Â Â
Saint Mary's (2-6-4, 0-2-1) will return to Moraga to host Pacific next Saturday at 1 p.m. in search of its first WCC win of the season.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Saint Mary's dictated much of the first half and was rewarded for its energy and effort with a goal in the opening minutes off a terrific right-footed strike from Cameron Kobey, his fifth of the season. The Gaels had a long throw-in in the attacking third out of the hands of outside back Talan Rochelle that was initially headed out by a Redhawks defender. The header failed to leave the box though and was chested down into a strike from Kobey to shock Seattle U and put the Gaels up 1-0. Saint Mary's held Seattle U to just four shots to get into the locker room up a goal at the half.Â
The second half told a different story though as the Redhawks tallied 17 shots to yield four second half goals. The lead grew to 4-1 but the Gaels had a pair of shots including a penalty kick that rattled off of the cross bar to threaten late in the match. Graduate transfer Luke Schaefer found the back of the net in the 87th minute off a corner kick for his fourth goal of the season to add some late pressure, but the Redhawks were able to see the game out and record their first conference win of the season, 4-2.
Kobey led the Gaels with four shot attempts over his 90 minutes played while freshman center back Eemil Laamanen recorded his 11th 90-minute match of the season to lead the team. Â Â
