Moraga, CA - Head Coach Jedd Soto has to be pleased with the play of his entire team as everyone contributed in the lopsided win. Saint Mary's (20-13-1) moves to seven games over .500 with a 17-6 clubbing over San Francisco State (7-34-1) Tuesday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field.
With minor injuries to regular players Kenny Fuglerud and Joel Staples, Coach Soto looked to his bench to help keep things rolling as the Gaels are playing some of their best baseball of the season.
Starting at shortstop today for Saint Mary's was freshman Daniel Alcaire who came up huge for the Gaels in the LMU series, and showed no signs of slowing down in today's game. While going just 1-for-6, Alcaire did knock in a run, and played some stellar defense at short, routinely keeping several hard hit balls into the infield and preventing any Gator extra base hits.
On the mound to start for the Gael's today was freshman Taylor Reid (1-0) who had good stuff as he went six complete, scattering seven hits, giving up three runs, two earned, walking none and striking out two. Reid's lone blemish on the afternoon was a no-doubt homerun to the Gators big hitting catcher Matt Kavanaugh in the top of the sixth.
Offensively the Gaels started hot and kept it up for most of the game, as five Gael's had multi-hit games. Not surprisingly one of those batters was sophomore left fielder Kyle Jensen who extended his hit streak to a personal best nine games. Jensen was perfect on the day going 3-for-3 hitting his ninth double of the season in the bottom of the first down the left field line which plated one of Jensen's two RBI's on the day. To say Jensen is on a hot streak is an understatement as the big sophomore is now batting at a .441 clip this season, over his hitting streak Jensen is hitting a Ruthian .611.
On the mound for the Gators was Jeff Henning (0-3) who had no answer for Saint Mary's as he was tagged for eight hits, six runs, all earned one walk and no strike outs in just two innings before being pulled. The Gaels scored four in the first, two in the second and third, eight in the fourth and added another run in the bottom of the eight, going on to score a season high 17 runs.
Sophomores Anthony Aliotti and Ryan Mulligan also had very nice days at the plate. Aliotti added to his hitting streak, which now stands at six games after going 3-for-5 with his ninth double of the season. Aliotti also knocked in three runs and scored a pair.
Mulligan added to his very strong sophomore campaign behind the dish, showing he's very capable of hitting anything as he went a perfect 3-for-3 on the afternoon, with three runs scored and two knocked in. Mulligan also showed his excellent patience drawing his 22 walk of the season.
Junior Cory Miller was another one of those Gaels who collected multiple hits on the afternoon; the centerfielder went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and one knocked in. This makes Miller's 13th multi-hit game of the season which puts him in a tie for second with Aliotti and sophomore Randy Wells.
Wells collected four hits in five at bats on the afternoon scoring two runs and knocking in two. Wells was extremely close to hitting his fourth homerun of the season, hitting a seed to the fence, but it just didn't have the height to get out.
Coming on in relief for the Gaels was freshman David Small. Small had his best outing in the Gael's pinstripes as he tossed two complete innings, giving up just one hit, no runs, no walks, while striking out two. Most impressive however was the improved command he showed on the afternoon with all his pitches.
The Gaels look to continue their hot hitting and strong pitching as they head down south for a three game series, playing No. 12 ranked University San Diego at Cunningham Baseball Stadium. The first game is Friday April 18th with a 3:00 PM first pitch.
