
Russell Named 2008 PCSC Scholar-Athlete of The Year

Portland, OR – Saint Mary's senior second baseman Bronwyn Russell has been named the 2008 Pacific Coast Softball Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year, PCSC Commissioner Wendy Guthrie announced Friday. The award recognizes achievement athletically, academically and involvement in the community, and is voted on the by the Athletic Directors of the six PCSC schools.
Russell, from Greenback, Wash., had a stellar playing career for the Gaels and recorded a 3.90 GPA while majoring in Health Science. Russell was a two-time first team ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII selection, earning the honor in both 2007 and 2008. She also was named to the Dean's List at Saint Mary's all eight semesters of her academic career. In addition, Russell was a finalist to be selected for Saint Mary's valedictorian, and was presented with the George R. McKeon Award, for Saint Mary's top scholar-athlete at graduation.
Russell also served as Saint Mary's Student Advisory Committee (SAC) President for four years. Russell was heavily involved in the Moraga, Calif., community. She participated in the Carnival for Kids, Moraga the Beautiful, Breast Cancer Walk, helped serve food at St. Vincent DePaul and worked youth softball clinics. She also organized the SAC Canned Food and End of School Year Clothing Drives.
On the field, Russell was a four-time All-PCSC selection, earning first team honors as a freshman, junior and senior. She was named second team All-PCSC as a sophomore. Russell was the 2005 PCSC Freshman of the Year. This past season, Russell hit .361 and led the Gaels in runs scored, 34, and stolen bases,18, to help Saint Mary's to a program-best record of 27-26.
