
Women's Soccer Gets Third Overtime Win Of The Year, Defeat UCI 2-1

IRVINE, CA – The Saint Mary's women's soccer team got a goal by Ashley Nied in the 92nd minute to post a 2-1 win over the UC Irvine Anteaters on Sunday afternoon in the UC Irvine Invitational at Anteater Stadium. With the win, SMC was named the co-champions of the tournament, and Nied was named the co-MVP of the tournament.
Nied put Saint Mary's (5-3-1) up 1-0 in the 18th minute as she scored off a cross from Ashley Soro. The goal by Nied was her third of the season, which tied her for the team lead at the time.
Saint Mary's held its one-goal lead and UC Irvine (4-5) scoreless for 85 minutes before Kate Berrini scored her fourth goal of the weekend to tie the match at 1-1. The assists were awarded to Nikki Forrest and Alyssa Humphrey.
The Gaels won the match after Alex Ciliento crossed the ball into Nied who scored her second of the match on a header in the 92nd minute. Following the overtime win against UCI, Saint Mary's is now 3-0-0 in overtime games this season.
Saint Mary's goalkeeper Tara Larson recorded four saves in the match, while Anteater keeper Kanielle de Seriere had four saves as well.
The Gaels and Cal State Bakersfield were named Co-Champions of the UC Irvine Invitational. Ashley Nied of Saint Mary's and Alexa Ngo of Cal State Bakersfield were named Co-MVPs.
Saint Mary's will return to action on Friday, September 26 when the Gaels travel to Palo Alto, CA to take on the No. 6 ranked Stanford Cardinal. The game between SMC and Stanford will kick-off at 6 p.m. at Maloney Field.
