Men's Tennis Unable to Top No. 25 California

Berkeley, CA - The No. 51 Saint Mary's men's tennis team was unable to top the No. 25 ranked Golden Bears of California, as they were defeated 6-1 at the Hellman Tennis Complex on the UC Berkeley campus. The Gaels did earn victories in both doubles and singles play, as Lucas Tirelli and Steven Dawson-Roberts earned a 8-7(3) victory at the two spot, and fresman Sherif Hamdy notched a win at the five position.
In Hamdy's first true collegiate competition, the newcomer defeated California's Bozhidar Katsarov in a very tight match, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 1-0 (5). With the loss the Gaels begin the 2009 season with an 0-1 record, while California improves to 1-0. Saint Mary's returns to action on Thursday, January 22, as they take on the Stanford Cardinal in Stanford, CA at 1:30 PM.
