Men's Golf Finishes 5th At Firestone Invitational

Akron, OH - The Saint Mary's men's golf team posted a final round score of 298 (+10) and finished the Firestone Invitational in fifth place. The 2009 Firestone Invitational defending champions shot a 54-hole score of 283-292-298-873 (+9) from the North Course at the Firestone Country Club.
In the final round, Saint Mary's got a pair of 73s from Richard Conlin and Henrik Holm, while Anders Engell shot 75 and Mac McClung capped the Gaels' scoring with a round of 77. Ben Geyer shot 80 and Dalan Refioglu, who was playing as an individual, shot 76 (+4) on Tuesday.
Indiana posted an 849 (-15) overall score for a one-shot victory over Notre Dame, as the Hoosiers shot 285 to the Fighting Irish's 286 on Tuesday. New Mexico State's final round of 288 moved the Lobos into third place and Eastern Michigan finished fourth at 868 (+4), one shot behind NMSU.
Richard Conlin posted his first career top-10 finish, as he ended the tournament tied for 10th place with a 216 (+2) total. Conlin shot a career-best round of 68 (-4) to open the tournament, and following that with rounds of 75 and 73, from the par-72, 7,060-yard North Course.
Anders Engell shot 220 (+6) to tie for 22nd place overall, while Geyer (222) finished tied for 32nd overall, after entering the final round tied for seventh. McClung finished a pair of shots behind Geyer in 40th place, and Holm finished at 226, after opening with rounds of 80 and 73 on Monday.
Maryland's John Popeck and Indiana's David Erdy shot 207 (-9) to tie for the lead after 54 holes. Notre Dame's Max Scodro (209) and Tom Usher (212) finished third and fourth respectively, and Joon Heui Lee of New Mexico State rounded out the top-5 with a score of 213 (-3).
The Gaels will return to action in two weeks, when they host the Saint Mary's Invitational from the Bayonet and Blackhorse Golf Courses in Seaside, CA. The tournament will be played on Oct. 25-26, with 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 on Tuesday.
