EUGENE, Ore. - The Saint Mary's men's golf team battled through a difficult opening day at the 36th annual Duck Invitational on Monday, with just one team finishing the 36 holes in red figures. Despite the high scores from across the field, the Gaels put together the second lowest round out of the 15-team field over the second set of 18 holes to put themselves just a stroke out of fourth place.
In round one, senior Aidan Lee continued his momentum from the R.E.L. Invitational two weeks ago, and carded a 71 (E) for the team's low score in the morning round. Additional counting scores came from Avery Lazarski (+2), Inigo Izuzquiza (+3) and Sam Baumuller (+4). The morning round played nearly four strokes over par for the entire field with an average score of 74.2.
Lee was able to break into red figures in the afternoon to help put together one of the best team rounds over the second 18 holes for Saint Mary's. Lee recorded three birdies and just one bogey for a 69 (-2). Baumuller also bounced back, with three birdies to finish even par, as the Gaels shot 1-over-par as a team to sit in seventh place and just one stroke out of fourth.
Saint Mary's finished the opening day of the Duck Invitational with the second best par-4 scoring, at 4.15, and fourth in total pars, with 109, to give themselves a chance to make a run heading into the final round on Tuesday.
