Shanna Smith enters her first year as a volunteer assistant coach for the Saint Mary's softball team after being hired in the summer of 2009. Smith's primary responsibilities on the field will be working with the infielders and hitting. Off the field, Smith will oversee the strength and conditioning program, scouting reports, and manage the recruiting database.
Smith spent last season as an assistant coach for North Carolina State after graduating from there in May 2008. A four-year shortstop at NC State from 2005-08, Smith was twice named first-team All-ACC. She also became the first Pack player to pick up first-team NFCA All-Region honors as a senior.
Smith complied some heavy numbers with the Wolfpack, setting several school records along the way. She owns the school single-game record for total bases (11) and stolen bases (3) and is tied for game records for at-bats (6), runs scored (3), hits (5), walks (3). In the season record books she stands first for on-base percentage (.440), runs scored (52), triples (4), walks (36) and stolen bases (26). Her 86 career stolen bases is a school record, as are her marks in triples (10) runs scored (169) and stolen-base percentage (.860).
Smith played in 257 games during her tenure at NC State, including 244 starts. In all, she started in 233 consecutive games beginning during her freshman campaign and ending with her last collegiate contest.
