MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's lacrosse team heads to Colorado this week for two games. On Friday, SMC takes on Denver in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at 3:00 p.m. (PT). The Gaels will then take on Vermont on Sunday, March 6 in non-conference action, also at 3:00 p.m. Both games will take place at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on the Denver campus.
Last week Saint Mary's (0-2, 0-1 MPSF) dropped a 21-12 decision to UC Davis in non-conference action. Much like the season opener against Cal where the Gaels and Golden Bears were tied at halftime, Saint Mary's got off to a solid start against the Aggies. A goal by Holly Hayes just before halftime put the Gaels up 7-6 at the break, but a string of six consecutive goals by the Aggies put the game away.
In the loss, Mariah Walk scored three goals while Juliet Munroe, Krista Morgan and Jillian Chong each added two goals apiece.
Walk leads the Gaels with seven points and six goals. Morgan is second on the team with four points and three goals.
Nisa Orozco-McCormick is the team groundball leader with 10 while Kathleen Worsdale has tallied 20 saves in two games in goal.
As a team, SMC has a slight 60-58 groundballs edge against opponents and a slight 18-17 edge in turnovers caused.
Denver (0-4, 0-0 MPSF) lost games to Hofstra and Stony Brook last week. The Pioneers are led by Kara Secora with nine points, while Melissa Maier and Lauren Ciccomascolo have eight points each. Ashley Harman is the primary goalkeeper with 18 saves in four games.
Denver leads the all-time series against Saint Mary's 12-4, as the Pioneers have won the last 10 meetings. SMC's last win against Denver came on May 5, 2002.
Vermont (0-2) enters the week with losses to Massachusetts and Colgate. The Catamounts face Dartmouth on Wednesday, before making the trip to Denver to face the Gaels (and later the Pioneers). Vermont is led by Natalie Jones and Megan MacDonald with four goals and five points apiece. In goal, Laura Barber has notched 13 saves in two games.
The Gaels and Catamounts have faced each other once as Vermont won 17-10 on March 20, 2006.
