MORAGA, Calif. -- A trio of current and former Saint Mary's men's basketball standouts are among the 24-man 'Golden Star' Australian Boomers squad at its upcoming Gold Coast training camp.
Former Saint Mary's stars Patrick Mills and Daniel Kickert join rising junior Matthew Dellavedova at the camp, which will determine the squad that will represent Australia at the 2011 Stankovic Cup, an Olympic Test Event in England, two friendly games at Spain and, most importantly, the FIBA Oceana Championships against New Zealand.
Mills, who burst on the international scene while representing Australia at the 2008 Olympic Games, recently finished his second season with the Portland Trail Blazers. Kickert, who plays professionally for PGE Turów Zgorzelec in Poland, appeared for the Boomers in a two-game series against China last month. Dellavedova represented the country in several international competitions as a youth and was a member of the senior squad at the 2009 Oceana Championships.
The initial training camp is scheduled for July 25-29 at Gold Coast, Queensland. A final squad of 12 will travel to Hanning, China for the 2011 Stankovic Cup, which takes place August 1-4 and features the national teams from Angola, China and Russia.
The Gold Coast camp will be an integral part of the Boomers' preparations for their all-important upcoming clash with the New Zealand Tall Blacks in the FIBA Oceania Championship for Men, where an automatic berth at the London Olympic Games is at stake.
In addition to the men's senior camp, current Saint Mary's rising senior Clint Steindl is representing Australia at the Four Nations Tournament and the World University Games, while assistant coach Adam Caporn is serving in a similar capacity for that team.
