MORAGA, Calif. - Saint Mary's baseball's junior third baseman Patrick Wisdom became the second highest player ever drafted in the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft when he was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals with the 52nd overall pick on Monday.
"It is just a dream come true," said Wisdom. "I really don't know what else to say, I am totally speechless. I am very proud to play at Saint Mary's and very honored to be a part of the Saint Mary's community."
A native of Murrieta Calif., he played in and started all 53 games for the Gaels this season, making him just one of two players to do that for SMC in 2012. He finished the year leading the Gaels with 39 runs scored and nine home runs. He was third in the West Coast Conference with the nine home runs.
Over the final month of the season Wisdom was on fire, leading the team with a .341 average, going 15-for-44 with six runs scored, three doubles, three home runs, and eight runs driven in. In the game against UC Davis on May 22 he blasted two home runs over the left field fence to become the first player at the new Louis Guisto Field to record a multi-homer day.
"Patrick Wisdom is a rare five tool athlete who is extremely competitive and hard working," said head coach Jedd Soto. "He pushed himself on the field and in the classroom every day for the past three years. He has always represented us well during his time at Saint Mary's College. I have no doubt he will have a lot of success at every level of professional baseball. He has always been a pleasure to coach and brought a lot of positive energy to our baseball program."
When asked if he had any idea the Cardinals were going to take him on the first day Wisdom had this to say: "No I had no idea. I knew that they were interested, I was just watching the draft results to see what my friends were doing when I got a text from my advisor saying it is probably not going to happen today, and then he called back and said we are working out a deal with the Cardinals with the 52nd pick and would I sign there and I said 'Absolutely, get it done.' So my family and I just watched the television to see my name get called."
For his career, Wisdom a career .303 hitter and is third all-time in home runs at Saint Mary's with 29. His 12 home runs his freshman year ranks tied for 10th all-time in a single season. He was a named to the All-West Coast Conference First Team in 2011 and the All-WCC Freshman Team in 2010.
With the 52nd pick he becomes the second highest player ever drafted by Saint Mary's in the MLB Draft. Mark Teahen was selected by the Oakland Athletics with the 39th overall pick.
