COLLEGE STATION. Tex. - On a 103 degree afternoon with thunderstorms, the Saint Mary's women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over Sam Houston State on Friday afternoon in the Texas A&M Tournament. The match was delayed by lightning for about 90 minutes with the Gaels up 1-0 in the first half.
"We played well today," said head coach Kai Edwards. "We dominated in every facet of the game. Our team played with the mentality that we were always going to win."
In the first half, the Gaels went up 1-0 in the 25th minute as Christina Tognetti scored her first goal of the season. The lightning delay came in the 33rd minute as both teams cleared the field and went into the locker room. The delay lasted nearly 90 minutes.
"You always want to score more goals, but we did create a lot of chances," said Edwards. "All 11 defended very well today... a shutout on the road is good. Now we get ready for an exciting game on Sunday versus a very good team."
Saint Mary's outshot the Bearkats 20-5, taking 10 shots in each half. Tognetti fired off five shots while Celina Minissian took four shots. Minissian also had the assist on the score. Vicki Shimkus, Brianna Campos, Katy Roby and Noria Mitchell each took two shots each.
Khayla Jones made her first collegiate start in goal and notched the shutout going 90 minutes and recording three saves.
Saint Mary's is back in action on Sunday when it takes on No. 18 Texas A&M on the Aggie campus.
