MORAGA, Calif. – The Saint Mary's women's soccer team begins West Coast Conference play this week when it hosts San Francisco on Saturday October 5th at 1:00 p.m. The match will be broadcast live online by theWtv.
Saint Mary's is 2-0-1 in its last three WCC season openers, including a 2012 win in the 110th minute at Gonzaga. In that match-up, Vicki Shimkus took a long pass from Anne Whipple and raced to the goal to net the game-winner with 45 seconds left in the second overtime. In 2010, the Gaels opened the year vs. USF and came away with a 1-0 victory at Saint Mary's Stadium.

The Gaels won a thrilling 2-1 match against Cal Poly last week, in their final tune-up for WCC action. Saint Mary's got on the board first in the sixth minute as Briana Campos scored her team-leading fourth goal of the year. CP tied the match at 1-1 in the 18th minute and would remain tied until halftime. In the second-half, the Gaels broke through in the 68th minute as Shimkus scored off a free kick from Casidee Lynch. Nicole Schultz was the goalie for the entire second-half and earned her first collegiate win.
Campos leads the Gaels with nine points and four goals this season. Caroline Beaulne and Melissa Madrid have scored two goals each, while Shimkus leads the Gaels with three assists. As a team, the Gaels have scored 11 goals in 11 games with 14 assists.
Kaeli Schmidt has been the starting goal keeper this season with 51 saves in 938 minutes.
San Francisco is 5-4-2 this season, falling to Long Beach 1-0 and No. 12 California 3-0 in its last two match-ups.
The Dons have scored eight goals in 11 matches this season, while allowing 10 goals. Lexie Krueger is the scoring leader with three goals, while five other Dons have one goal apiece. The Dons have taken 124 shots and 57 shots on goal. Mackenzie Krieser has taken a team high 42 shots, with the next closest USF player with 12 shots.
The goalkeeper is Madaline Schiffel with a 0.87 goals against average and 47 saves. She has played every minute this season.
After this week, the Gaels are back in action on Friday, October 11th at home against Pacific.
