STANFORD, Calif. -- Junior Jonathan De Los Reyes is tied with four other golfers for seventh place individually, while the Saint Mary's golf team is tied for ninth among 24 teams at The Goodwin, a 54-hole collegiate golf event at Stanford Golf Course.
The Gaels are tied with Washington State after posting rounds of 277-285 for a 36-hole total of 2-over par 562. The two teams sit just one stroke behind Santa Clara for eighth place and seven back of the 9th ranked Oregon Ducks.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham leads the tournament at 19-under after carding an impressive 11-under par in today's second round. The Blazers are four strokes ahead of 25th ranked UNLV and six in front of 32nd ranked SMC, which shot the day's best team round at 12-under par 268.
Individually, UNLV's John Oda is tied with UAB's Will Cannon for the individual lead at 12-under par. Cannon fired an impressive 8-under par 62 in today's second round. Stanford's Maverick McNealy, ranked fifth nationally, is in third place at 9-under par.
"The course played a little tougher this morning due to moisture in the rough, which makes the holes play a lot longer," said SMC head coach Scott Hardy. "The hole locations were also a little more difficult. We are going to have to deal with a bit different conditions tomorrow afternoon and, hopefully, we manage things well and put together a strong finish."
A native of Antioch, De Los Reyes owns rounds of 67-68 and is tied for seventh place at 5-under par 135. He is joined by golfers from SMU, UNLV, TCU and BYU who are just one stroke behind UAB's Lee Hodges for sixth place.
SMC senior Tye Gabriel and freshman Pavan Sagoo are in a 9-golfer tie for 54th place at 3-over par 143. Gabriel posted rounds of 68-75, while Sagoo has carded consistent scores of 71-72 during the tournament's first two days of competition.
Freshman Perry Cohen made a 5-stroke improvement over yesterday's first round with an even par 70. After making par on his first five holes, he moved to 2-under par with birdies on the sixth and seventh holes. The San Diego native dropped a stroke with a bogey on nine then went back to even with a bogey on 16.
Junior Maclayne Marr is tied for 90th place in the 129-golfer field with rounds of 71-76 for a 7-over par 147.
The tournament resumes tomorrow with the Gaels going off the 10th tee beginning at 1:21 p.m. SMC is paired with golfers from West Coast Conference rivals BYU and Pepperdine.
