SKILLMAN, N.J. -- Taking the top spot in the lineup in her final year in Moraga, Saint Mary's women's tennis player Danielle Flores lined up match after match against the best her opposition had to offer.
On Tuesday, Flores earned a little recognition for her efforts atop the Gaels lineup as she was named the Most Improved Senior player in the Northwest region. She received the award via a vote of coaches throughout the region and is the second Saint Mary's player in a row to earn the honor, joining last year's winner Jenny Jullien.
Flores spent much of the 2014-15 season in the national rankings, climbing as high as No. 32 to begin the spring. She had a particularly good fall campaign, reaching the semifinals of the Cal Nike Invitational and winning a match at the ITA Northwest Regional.
During the spring, she earned a spot on the All-West Coast Conference preseason team and WCC Player of the Week honors for wins over BYU and Pacific during a 2-0 week for the Gaels. Flores won seven matches at the No. 1 spot, beating players from BYU, Princeton, Cal Poly, Sacramento State, Pennsylvania and Pacific in dual action. She ended the year as a second team All-WCC honoree.
Flores also played a key role in the leadership department as one of two seniors on a team that finished second in the WCC and reached the NCAA Tournament. Together with fellow senior Catherine Leduc, Flores helped shape a team that earned big wins over No. 18 Pepperdine and No. 54 Princeton. The Gaels climbed as high as No. 33 in the nation this season.
