RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. -- The Saint Mary's golf team opens competition tomorrow in the first of three rounds of the NCAA San Diego Regional at The Farms Golf Club.
Each of the 13 participating teams and 10 individuals conducted their only practice round on the par 72, 6,947-yard course today under sunny skies and gusting winds. The weather forecast calls for temperatures in the mid 60s with a high probability of rain late Thursday and all day Friday.
"We have played well in difficult conditions this spring," said freshman Pavan Sagoo. "We played in wind several times, including the WCC Championships and in the rain a couple of times. Hopefully, that experience will help us if the weather is poor this week."
Saint Mary's is represented by Jonathan De Los Reyes, Perry Cohen, Sagoo, Tye Gabriel and Connor Blick and will open play beginning at 9:15 a.m. off the 10th tee. The Gaels are paired with golfers from Idaho and Wichita State. Teams and individuals will be re-paired according to score after the first and second rounds. Admission is free to the public.
The Gaels are joined in the regional championships by top-seeded Arizona State, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Virginia, Georgia, East Tennessee State, Mississippi, host San Diego, Idaho, Wichita State and Eastern Kentucky.
In addition to the participating teams, 10 individual qualifiers will be competing for a spot at the NCAA finals, which will be hosted by the University of South Florida and is scheduled for May 29-June 3 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
Six 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted May 14-16. Thirteen teams and ten individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.
The Gaels will be appearing in their fifth NCAA regional championships and third in the last four seasons. SMC made its first regional appearance in 2005 and was invited to the 2008, 2012 and 2013 events, the last two as WCC champions.
Saint Mary's has advanced to the NCAA Championships twice, in 2008 at Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind. and 2013 at Capital City Club in Milton, Ga.
Originally designed by Pete, Perry and Alice Dye with the help of renowned golf icon Tommy Jacobs, The Farms Golf Club was extensively remodeled in 2000 with the assistance of famous golf course architect John Fought and PGA tour professional Tom Lehman.
The Gaels have played the course three times in the last four seasons, finishing in second place at The Farms Intercollegiate hosted by San Diego in 2012 and 2013 and sixth in 2014.
