NORMAN, Okla. -- Saint Mary's rising senior Hunter Rappleye has been named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
The Sacramento, Calif. native enters his final season at Saint Mary's with a 3.44 grade point average in mathematics. Rappleye is the first SMC golfer to earn the honor since 2012 and is the ninth Gael to be selected since 2004.
Rappleye, who also earned his second West Coast Conference All-Academic Team selection this season, has been included on the league's Commissioner's Honor Roll in each of his three seasons at Saint Mary's.
He was one of three SMC golfers to play in all 13 of the team's events last season and his 14th place tie in the league championships helped the Gaels earn their third conference title in the last five seasons. He registered 18 rounds of par or better, which is the seventh best single season total in program history. His best finish last season was a fifth place tie at the Jim West Intercollegiate.
Earlier this month, Rappleye turned in rounds of 70-71-71 at Del Monte Golf Course to earn medalist honors at the Monterey City Amateur.
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50 percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I, 78.0 in Division II, 77.0 in NAIA and 79.0 in Division III, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. Recipients must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
Saint Mary's opens the 2016-17 season on Monday, Sept. 12 at the Olympic Club Intercollegiate in San Francisco. The Gaels play five fall tournaments, culminating with the annual Saint Mary's Invitational on Oct. 24-26 at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach.
