SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A heavy dose of offense mixed with physicality pulled the Saint Mary's men's soccer team and Sacramento State even Saturday, as the two teams battled to a 1-1 double-overtime draw in the final game of the Copa de Causeway at Hornet Field.
A total of 33 shots, 12 corner kicks and 38 fouls were tallied in the game. Saint Mary's (2-5-3) won the shots battle, 20-13, and held a 9-3 advantage in corners. The Gaels put nine shots on goal. Remi Prieur made his third straight start in goal for Saint Mary's and made five saves with just one goal allowed in 110 minutes.
Alex Braman and Erik Lyons were named to the Copa de Causeway All-Tournament team.
Sacramento State (4-3-1) took an early 1-0 lead in the 12th minute off a penalty kick. The Gaels were called for a foul in the box, and moments later Ivan Ramirez sent home the opportunity for the lead.
Alex Pidoux evened the match at 1-1 in the 74th minute with his second goal of the season. Pidoux bodied in his goal, using his chest to bump a cross pass from Dakota Armour across the goal line for the score.
Sacramento State outshot Saint Mary's 4-3 across both overtimes. The Hornets put three shots on goal in extra time but Prieur made all three saves. The Gaels took two corner kicks in overtime but could not score on the set pieces.
Saint Mary's travels to the East Coast to face West Virginia and Pittsburgh on Saturday and Oct. 3, respectively. Fans can find coverage links for both matches on SMCGaels.com.
