DENVER - In the backend of the Colorado road trip, Saint Mary's men's soccer showed tremendous heart and fight, defeating soccer powerhouse Denver, 1-0, Sunday night at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.

The impressive win moves the Gaels to 2-3-2 on the season, as the Pioneers drop to 4-4 on the year.

After a tough first half that saw four impressive saves from sophomore keeper Remi Prieur, the Gaels flipped the script, and poured on the pressure in the remaining 45 minutes.

The Gaels outshot the Pioneers 4-2 in the second half, but had just one shot find the frame. SMC made the most of the shot, as Anders Engebretsen collected the assist from Dakota Armour and hammered away the shot into the back of the net to give SMC the hard fought victory.

THE GOAL

Saint Mary's (1-0): Armour fed the ball to Engebretsen in the corner of the 18 yard box and the sophomore curled the ball into the corner of the net for the game winning goal.

QUICK NOTES

Today was the fourth all-time meeting between the Gaels and Pioneers. SMC leads all-time series, 3-1.
First meeting since Sept. 3, 2003 (Saint Mary's win, 3-2).
Denver is now 44-3-2 in their last 49 home games.
Tonight's home loss for the Pioneers is just the second since Oct. 31, 2014.
Prieur improves to 2-1-2 on the season with tonight's clean sheet.
Saint Mary's head coach Adam Cooper now has 94 career wins as head coach of the Gaels.

Saint Mary's returns to its home turf for the first time in 19 days versus UC Davis on Thursday, Sept. 21 at 4 p.m.
