Saint Mary's was held to six shots on Sunday as No. 7 Santa Clara handed the Gaels their third conference loss.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Saint Mary's bad fortune against WCC-rival Santa Clara continued Sunday on the road as the No. 7 Broncos' offense came alive for four goals in an eventual 4-1 win. Saint Mary's is now 0-15-3 in their last 18 matchups against SCU.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gaels were held to six shots in the match by a tough Santa Clara defense and only managed one scoring try in the first half. SMC would eventually find the back of the net in the 74th minute of the match but it proved to be too late as the Broncos had already tallied four goals.
Only 40 seconds after Santa Clara's fourth goal of game, the Gaels stormed back down the field where AnnaMaria DiGeronimo connected on a volley to end the Broncos' shutout bid. The goal was DiGeronimo's first career goal and the sophomore totaled two shots on the afternoon.
Santa Clara took an early lead in the match as Kelsey Turnbow got the scoring started less than two minutes into the first half. Six and a half minutes later, the Broncos got another goal from Julie Doyle on an assist from Kelcie Hedge.
Hedge added two more goals of her own during the final half in the 54th and 73rd minute to widen Santa Clara's lead to four.
Gaels' keeper Maleah Milner recorded her third-highest save total of the season with six against the Broncos. Santa Clara fired off 22 shot attempts during the match and also had nine corner kicks.
