Saint Mary's dropped their Senior Day contest 3-1 on Saturday to BYU.
MORAGA, Calif. — The Cougars played spoiler to Saint Mary's Senior Day festivities on Saturday as BYU's three-first half goals were enough to take down the Gaels in Moraga.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Makaylie Moore proved to be the hero for the Cougars (10-4-1, 5-1 WCC) with two goals on five shots in only 44 minutes of action. Both of Moore's goals came on short through balls around the Gaels' box, including her 27th minute tally which figured as the game-winning goal for BYU. The Cougars' leading scorer, Elise Flake, also notched a goal in the 11th minute, her 10th of the season.
After being held to two shots in the opening 45, Saint Mary's (6-9-2, 1-5-1 WCC) played a stronger second half and took five shots. The Gaels got on the board in the 59th minute on a series of pretty passes followed by Kelsey Hill's strong finish.
Early in the second half, Jordyn Cunningham raced down the left side of the pitch and centered a cross into the box looking for a trailer. Senior Anyssa Dominguez quickly tapped a pass over to Hill who came streaking in with a strong boot for her second goal of the season.
Late in the half, Kailana Kaeo had two golden opportunities to cut the deficit even shorter but both attempts just narrowly missed entering the net. In the 85th minute, Kaeo teed up a set piece and glanced the crossbar on a lasered attempt. Shortly after, the junior rocketed a shot that curled just wide of the left post.
Prior to the match, the Gaels honored their two seniors, Dominguez and Jasmine Edwards who played their final match at Saint Mary's Stadium on Saturday. Edwards, who suffered a season-ending injury weeks ago, started the match before being subbed out in the first minute.

THOUGHTS FROM TRAVIS CLARKE
- "We didn't have a good first half and dug ourselves too deep of a hole. Once again, we rebounded well and played a strong second half. Our energy and pressing were good. We will get back to work on Monday and find a way to get a positive result next weekend."
- Kaeo, Hill, and Cunningham all took two shots to lead the Gaels.
- Maleah Milner totaled six saves in the match for the second straight match.
- The two teams combined for 32 fouls in the physical affair.
- BYU rattled off 20 shots compared to seven for the Gaels.
