MSOC | No. 4 Gaels Hold Off Santa Clara in Overtime Win

No. 4 Saint Mary's held off Santa Clara on Sunday for a 2-1 win after an exciting overtime goal from Filippo Zattarin.

MORAGA, Calif. — No. 4 Saint Mary's took down Santa Clara on Sunday in a heart-pounding overtime win. The game-winning goal was scored in the early moments of the first overtime period and took the Gaels to 14-0 on the season and 9-0 at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first goal of the match came in the 54th minute after Saint Mary's was awarded a penalty kick following a foul in the box. Stephen Dougherty took the kick for the Gaels and fired it into the back left of the goal, giving Saint Mary's the 1-0 lead. It was Dougherty's fourth goal of the season, all of which have come off penalty kicks. Dougherty has taken and converted each of the penalty kicks for the Gaels this season.

Santa Clara evened the score at 1-1 in the 72nd minute of the match after Nate Shue fed the ball to Andres Jimenez, who sent the ball into the back of the net on a header. The goal broke a six-game shutout streak that the Gaels had maintained since their Sept. 16 match against UC Riverside.

The two teams traded shots back and forth after the goals but neither team was able to convert in the final minutes of regulation, and the game went into overtime tied 1-1.

Filippo Zattarin sealed the win for Saint Mary's in just the seventh minute of overtime after the Gaels were given a free kick after a foul just outside the box on the right side. Zattarin lined up and sent the shot bending into the back left corner of the net to secure the 2-1 win, retaining the Gaels' perfect record in thrilling fashion.

The first half was a defensive stalemate between the Gaels and Broncos with only three shots on goal being taken combined. Anders Engebretsen took both of Saint Mary's shots on goal in the first half during the third and 15th minute. The first shot came after a pass from Jake Rudel that sent Engebretsen into the middle of the box but was fired just wide of the net.

Santa Clara had their first scoring opportunity of the match during the 25th minute. Following a Saint Mary's attempt, Sam Agosti got control of the ball on a breakaway and fed it to Alex Achramowicz who shot it toward the back right corner, but the ball rolled just wide of the net.
