Saint Mary's Seniors…
Saint Mary's will honor seven seniors in their 2025 season finale on Saturday against Portland. Their seniors include forward TJ Knight, defender Gaige Gibbs, forward Luke Hoelting, midfielder Oliver Bieleveldt, midfielder Sam Danner, defender Fynn Allmon and midfielder Bastian Toelhoej.
Danner, Hoelting and Knight were immediate impact transfers for the Gaels while Allmon, Toelhoej and Gibbs were the team's captains going into the season. Toelhoej leads the team with five goals and 23 shot attempts.
Historic Season for WCC…
Going into the final week of conference play, the West Coast Conference has a case for four bids into this year's NCAA Tournament. Three teams are currently ranked inside the top-15 in the national poll while San Francisco was receiving votes last week and picked up their tenth win of the season in a 1-0 victory over Saint Mary's.
San Diego and Oregon State will face off in arguably the match of the season with the conference title on the line Saturday night in Corvallis but there is a high likelihood that all three get NCAA Tournament bids with San Francisco lurking for a fourth with an RPI of 32. The last time the WCC had four bids to the NCAA Tournament was in 2009 when the conference sent LMU, Saint Mary's, San Diego and Portland to the national tournament.
Series History…
Saint Mary's holds a record of 14-10-3 over Portland dating back to 2002. A season ago, the Gaels went into Portland and tied 2-2 for a gritty road draw, but Saint Mary's has not beaten the Pilots since 2021. The Gaels went on a five-game win streak from 2017-2021 but dropped back-to-back matches in 2022 and 2023, getting outscored 5-1.
The Gaels last win over a ranked opponent came in 2023 in a 1-0 win over #25 LMU. Their last win over a top-10 team was back in 2014 when they knocked off 4th ranked Washington 2-1 in overtime.
ABOUT THE PILOTS (12-1-3, 5-1-2)
The Portland Pilots enter the final week of conference play at 12-1-3 overall and 5-1-2 in conference. The Pilots have had their name littered all over the United Soccer Coaches national poll during the 2025 season and were even named the No. 1 team in the nation back in late September for the first time in program history. Portland is currently ranked 8th in the country as the highest ranked team in the WCC while San Diego sits at 9 and Oregon State at 13.
Key wins throughout the season have included Wisconsin, Kansas City, Denver and a 2-1 win over 12th ranked San Diego back on October 10th. Despite a season for the record books, San Diego and Oregon State have been just as good during conference play and sit ahead of the Pilots in the standings. Portland sits three points back of the Beavers but they will not have a shot at the WCC title since OSU and USD will play each other in the season finale with both programs separated by just one point.
Portland ranks second in the WCC with 37 goals on the season and leads the conference with just nine goals allowed for a 0.56 GAA. David Ajagbe and Joe Highfield have combined for 18 goals as the Pilots have six different players with multiple goals on the season.
Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM and you can catch all the action live on ESPN+. Be sure to follow your Gaels on Facebook, Instagram, and X to get all the latest Saint Mary's athletics updates and information.
