MSOC | Saint Mary’s Ends 2025 Season with Narrow Loss to Portland
11/15/2025 7:50:00 PM | Men's Soccer
MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's Men's Soccer closed out their 2025 campaign on senior day with a hard fought 1-0 loss to the 6th ranked Portland Pilots.
The Gaels were continuously active in the attack throughout the match, outshooting the Pilots 19-7, but ultimately were unable to find the finishing touch. Portland converted the match's lone goal in the 23rd minute, and despite relentless pressure from Saint Mary's, the breakthrough remained just out of reach. Luke Hoelting led the Gaels with five shots in 57 minutes of his senior day match.
FIRST HALF SMC 0 - 1 POR
Saint Mary's generated ten chances within the first 45 minutes compared to Portland's four. One of the most dangerous moments came on a free kick from Hubert Deragon, who served a perfectly placed ball to TJ Dilley, whose header rattled off of the woodwork.
Portland's goal came in the 23rd minute after capitalizing on a rebound that struck the crossbar and bounced back to a Pilot who cleaned it up to take the lead. Following that strike, the sophomore goalkeeper remained calm, which would be proven in by a standout moment when he punched away a well delivered corner kick to keep the ball out of danger.
FINAL SMC 0 - 1 POR
After the break, the Gaels came out with the same energy and intensity, pressing hard for an equalizer. Wasting no time, Hoelting fired a shot past his defender just outside the 6-yard box, missing to the left by inches.
Keeping fans on the edge of their seats, senior Bastian Toelhoej stole the ball from the Pilot's backline, drove into the 18-yard box, and fired a shot that forced a save from Portland's goalkeeper.
Even with the dangerous looks, Saint Mary's was unable to find the tying goal, but closed out their season with a hard fought effort all around. The Gaels were led by full match efforts by Hubert Deragon, TJ Dilley, Bastian Toelhoej, and Fynn Allmon.
Saint Mary's ends their 2025 season with an overall record of 2-8-6 and a conference record of 2-5-2. The Gaels will look to build on the experience gained this year as they turn their focus towards the 2026 season.
