MSOC | Saint Mary’s Travels South This Week To Face USD, LMU

The Gaels will travel down south this weekend to face conference opponents San Diego and LMU.

MORAGA, Calif. No. 4 Saint Mary's travels down south this weekend for matches against San Diego and LMU. Friday's match against the Toreros will begin at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday's match against the Lions kicks off at 2:00 p.m.

Saint Mary's continues their stellar season after a heart-pounding 2-1 win over Santa Clara last week to remain the only perfect team (14-0, 3-0 WCC) in the country and improve their home record to 9-0. The Gaels are ranked No. 4 in the RPI poll behind Wake Forest, Indiana, and Kentucky, respectively, and earned one vote this week for first place.

The Gaels have been nothing short of impressive this season, nabbing high offensive rankings in multiple categories. Saint Mary's is ranked number one in goals per match (3.07) with 43 goals so far through 14 matches. Forward Jake Rudel leads the Gaels with 12 goals and is tied for seventh in the nation for total goals.

Saint Mary's is also ranked fourth in shots per game and has taken 239 shots all season with an average of 17.07 shots per match. Anders Engebretsen is the top shot-taker for the Gaels and is ranked tied 10th in the country for shots per game with an average of 4.21 per game.

Defensively, Saint Mary's has been just as effective at shutting down their opponents match after match. The Gaels are ranked number one in goals against average and through all the matches this season, they have only allowed 5 goals with an average of .347 per game.

As a team, the Gaels have recorded a save percentage of .889, while goalie Remi Prieur has an individual save percentage of .886 which ranks him number one in the nation. Saint Mary's is also ranked number one in shutouts recorded (11) with the two most recent shutouts coming against conference opponents San Francisco (8-0) and Pacific (4-0).

The Gaels hold a perfect 3-0 record in conference play, ranking them first in the WCC. Saint Mary's ranks ahead of second-place Portland (2-0-1) and third-place LMU (2-1).

ABOUT SAN DIEGO
The Toreros have a 5-7-3 record so far this season and a conference record of 1-1-1. San Diego is coming off a 2-0 loss last week against San Diego State. The Toreros have had a mixed bag of conference matches this season with a 2-1 loss versus San Francisco, 1-0 win against Gonzaga, and a 1-1 tie versus Portland.

Stat leaders for the Toreros include Miguel Berry who leads in goals (5), shots (49), and game-winners (3). Berry is currently tied sixth in the conference for total number of goals and is ranked third in the conference for average shots taken per game (3.27). He is also tied third for total number of game-winning goals on the season (3).

San Diego is ranked first in the conference with 72 saves through 15 games and have an average of 4.8 per match. The Toreros are second in the conference behind Saint Mary's for total number of shutouts (5) this season. Goalie Matt Wiher has collected 48 saves for the Toreros and four of the five shutouts have been recorded by Wiher.

The Toreros hold the advantage of the Gaels with an all-time record of 10-29-7. Saint Mary's last win against San Diego came in 2013 when the Gaels beat out the Toreros 2-1 in overtime and the most recent match ended as a 2-2 tie in 2017.

ABOUT LOYOLA MARYMOUNT
The Lions hold a record of 5-9 through 15 matches with a 2-1 record in conference play. Loyola Marymount is ranked third in the WCC standings and are coming off a 4-1 loss against UCLA last weekend. The Lions will take on conference opponent Pacific on Friday prior to Sunday's match against Saint Mary's.

The Lions have collected a total of 14 goals through all their matches and are led by sophomore Kris Fourcand who has four while there are three other players who are tied for second with two goals a piece. Redshirt senior Antonio Porreco is also a top offensive producer for the Lions with 903 minutes played, four assists, and 18 shots.

LMU ranks third in the conference for total saves (55) through 15 matches with an average of 3.93 saves per game. Goalie Paul Lewis has 52 saves through 13 matches and is averaging 4 saves per match.

Saint Mary's and LMU have met many times over the years while the Gaels hold the edge over the Lions with an all-time record of 23-16-3. Over the course of the last four matches, Saint Mary's has held the upper-hand with a 3-1 record.
