GOLF | Slesinski Leads Gaels on Day 2 of Pacific Invitational

Michael Slesinski is in third place with 18 holes to go at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitaitonal

STOCKTON, Calif. — After two rounds of competition at Stockton Country Club, Saint Mary's sits in fifth at 13-under and is only five strokes back of the leader, BYU, heading into the final day of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational.

THE LEADERBOARD
The Cougars overtook first place on the leaderboard Friday with strong play towards the end of the round. BYU combined for a 7-under score on the last four holes to jump ahead of yesterday's leader, San Jose State.

Despite shooting 9-under for the day, the Gaels dropped one place in the standings although they remain squarely in contention with the four teams in front of them. Trailing BYU (18-under) is Nevada (16-under), San Jose State (15-under), San Francisco (14-under) and Saint Mary's.

SMC has three players in the top-10 of the individual leaderboard entering the final round in Michael Slesinski, Ethan Ashbrook, and Jeffrey Inouye-Wong. Slesinski leads the team and is tied for third after shooting 5-under par 66 on Friday. Ashbrook and Inouye-Wong are both tied for 10th place at 4-under, although Inouye-Wong is competing as an individual.

BYU's Peter Kuest remains at the top of the standings at 9-under after 36 holes. Rounding out the top-6 are Joe Fryer of Long Beach State who is one stroke back, while Kevin Velo (SJSU), Sam Harned (NEV), Tony Gil (NEV), and Slesinski are two strokes back of Kuest and tied for third.

SECOND ROUND HIGHLIGHTS
  • Slesinski totaled six birdies for a team-best 5-under second round.
  • Inouye-Wong jumped to 10th after a 4-under round with six total birdies.
  • Ashbrook had four birdies and an eagle on 16th on the back nine.
  • Ashbrook's eagle was his second of the tournament after eagling the first hole yesterday.
  • Ryan Grauman scored the Gaels' fourth eagle of the tournament on a par 4 12th.
