MSOC | Engebretsen Lifts No. 4 Gaels Over No. 24 Oregon State in NCAA Tourney

Saint Mary's earned a 1-0 win over Oregon State on Sunday afternoon and will play the winner of Stanford versus UC Irvine in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

FRESNO, Calif.— The No. 4 Gaels beat the No. 24 Oregon State Beavers 1-0 on Sunday afternoon as Anders Engebretsen secured the game-winning goal during the last ten minutes of the match to advance the Gaels to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The lone goal of the match was scored in the early seconds of the 81st minute by Engebretsen who made contact with a shot that went into the top right corner of the net. Freshman Sebastian Schacht picked up an assist on the goal as he fed the pass to Engebretsen to help him beat the OSU defense.

The first 20 minutes of the match between the Gaels and the Beavers were largely defensive as neither team took a shot on goal. The Gaels had an opportunity on a corner kick in the 30th minute by Engebretsen, however the shot was headed by a Beaver defender back towards midfield.

Saint Mary's took their first shot on goal in the 39th minute on a breakaway by Jakub Svehlik, but the shot was kicked out and resulted in another corner kick by Engebretsen that was punched out by the Oregon State goalie. The Gaels' second shot on goal was recorded by Valentin Sponer during the 43rd minute after a feed from Tobias Clauss that was again stopped by the goalie. The Gaels defense stepped up in the first half as Remi Prieur wasn't forced to make a single save and the game went into the halftime break tied at zero.

The Gaels came out quickly in the second half and took three shots before the 60th minute. Saint Mary's had a quality attempt just before the in the 57th minute as Jake Rudel crossed the ball in front of the goal to Joseph Restani but Restani was unable to connect. Only a minute later, Clauss rocketed a shot from the top of the box but the shot went just high of the crossbar.

The Beavers had two close attempts during the 66th minute of the second half with the first resulting in Prieur's first save of the match and the second going wide to the left of the net. Prieur earned his 18th win and 14th clean sheet by making one save against 10 Beaver shots.

THOUGHTS FROM ADAM COOPER
  • "It was a great team win. It's been a difficult week mentally with everything going on and the guys rose to the occasion. Oregon State is a great team and they threw a lot of stuff at is. Our guys did a great job of adjusting, Anders scored a tremendous goal, and we showed great poise to close it out."
