MORAGA, Calif. — No. 5 Saint Mary's (15-0-1, 4-0-1 WCC) will play their final home regular season match of the season this Sunday as they host Gonzaga at 1 p.m. Before the game, the Gaels will honor their lone senior, Stephen Dougherty, as part of Senior Day festivities.
Links to live stats and the live stream can be found on the Gaels' schedule page. At the match, there will be a beer garden behind the north-facing goal which will be serving beverages until the conclusion of halftime.
The Gaels return home to Moraga after salvaging four points (1-0-1) on a tough road trip down south. SMC took on San Diego last Friday and despite holding the Toreros to only three shots, the teams tied 1-1 to break the Gaels' 15-match winning streak dating back to last season. Two days later, Saint Mary's scored three first half goals in an eventual 3-2 win over Loyola Marymount to earn their 15th victory of the year.
In the polls, the Gaels dropped one spot to fifth in the United Soccer Coaches' poll after being ranked fourth for the past two weeks.
College Soccer News still pegs the Gaels at No. 2 while
Top Drawer Soccer dropped the team to ninth. Â The NCAA's RPI system now lists Saint Mary's at eighth in the nation.
Saint Mary's Stadium has been friendly to the Gaels in recent years as Saint Mary's has not lost on their home turf since Sept. 16, 2016 in a 3-2 decision to Air Force. SMC is undefeated in their past 20 matches in Moraga with a sterling 16-0-4 record during that span. The Gaels are 9-0 this season at home.
With two more assists against LMU, Jake Rudel remains atop the conference in points with 29 (12 G, 5 A). The junior is now second all-time in program history for points in a single-season and trails only Juan Guarda who totaled 41 in 1990.
Joseph Restani has broken onto the scene of late with six goals in just seven games this season. Restani leads the team with five conference goals and tallied two less than 90 seconds apart in the team's 3-2 win against the Lions.
ABOUT GONZAGA
The Bulldogs currently reside at the bottom of the conference standings at 0-5 in WCC play and a 2-12-2 overall record. GU is in the midst of a seven game losing streak and have not won since Sept. 20 against Sacramento State.
Gonzaga has totaled 12 goals this season in their 16 matches and are led by Demitrius Kigeya who has four of those goals. In goal, Ben Willis has started 15 contests for the Bulldogs and leads the conference in saves with 67.
As a team, GU is surrendering over two goals per match and have not shut out their opposition in their past 10 games.
Saint Mary's is 20-12-4 all-time against Gonzaga and have dominated the Bulldogs in recent years. The Gaels have won the last five matchups between the two teams and are 11-1-1 against GU dating back to 2010. The Bulldogs have not defeated the Gaels in Moraga since 2007.
