MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's beach volleyball team earned two victories on Saturday, sweeping familiar foe Feather River College, 5-0, and downing West Coast Conference rival San Francisco, 4-1, on a stormy day at Moraga Commons.

The Gaels' (8-2) top two pairs of Morgan Hughes and Payton Rund, and Emily Bible and Lindsey Knudsen, both went 2-0 on the day. It took three sets against the Dons (2-6), but Hughes and Rund pushed their winning streak to seven with two wins. They topped the Golden Eagles' (2-2) No. 1 pair of Chloe Hampton and Precious Helekahi in straight sets, 21-6, 21-6. Later they came from behind against USF's Dalla Vecchia and Julia Topor after losing the first set, 21-17. They would win the second set, 21-14, and edge the Dons' duo in the third set, 15-13.

"Today we did a great job of staying focused through all kinds of weather," said Saint Mary's head coach Rob Browning. "Going from sun to hail isn't always easy, but all our pairs embraced it well."

Bible and Knudsen got back on the winning track with two wins as well. They swept FRC's Cyan Blackdeer and Katie McKay, 21-10, 21-8. In the afternoon they beat San Francisco's Haley Howell and Carly Lowry, 22-20, 21-16.

Saint Mary's won nine of 10 pairs matchups on the day, only dropping the No. 4 pairs versus USF. Jennifer "Boo" Laird and Madi Wilkerson teamed up for the first time this season, winning 23-21, 21-15 at No. 5 pairs versus the Dons.

"It was awesome having Feather River back this year, the previous home of Morgan Hughes," said Browning. "They have a strong program and our players came out ready to compete. San Francisco was another great test for us. Both teams keep improving throughout the season and it's fun to see us pushed to our limits."

The Gaels continue their home stand with a lone match Tuesday versus Pacific at Moraga Commons.
