STANFORD, Calif. -- The Saint Mary's beach volleyball team faced the top-ranked team in the country for the second straight week Saturday, this time in the form of No. 1/1 UCLA, as the Bruins downed the Gaels, 5-0, on the first day of the Stanford West Coast Classic at the Stanford Beach Volleyball Stadium.

The closest match of the day came at the No. 3 pairs, where the Gaels' (12-8) Sarah Chase and Mary Hernandez battled UCLA's (28-3) Zana Muno and Savvy Simo to extra points in each set. Chase and Hernandez pushed the Bruins duo to an extra point in the first set, eventually falling 22-20. Muno and Simo had to work even harder in the second set to earn a sweep, requiring four extra points before finally clinching the match with a 25-23 victory.

Emily Bible and Lindsey Knudsen scored the next most points as a pair for the Gaels, falling 21-15 and 21-12 versus Lily Justine and Sarah Sponcil at the No. 2 pairs spot. Lindsey Calvin and Kelsey Knudsen also earned double-figure points in each of their sets at No. 4, going 21-14 and 21-11 in a two-set loss to Mac May and Elise Zappia.

The Gaels face No. 5/5 Cal Poly and host and No. 13/13 Stanford at noon and 3 p.m. Sunday, respectively. SMC's match against the Cardinal will be televised live on the Pac-12 Network.
