June 15, 2018 MORAGA, Calif. -- Saint Mary's men's basketball welcomes five newcomers to the program for the 2018-19 season. Head Coach Randy Bennett and staff signed five players this past season, and are excited to have them on campus and integrated into the Saint Mary's campus culture.
The new recruiting class features five versatile players that all offer excellent international experience.
Quinn Clinton 6-3 Guard Christchurch, New Zealand
"Quinn is a big combo guard with excellent shooting ability," said Bennett. "He is a hard worker with high basketball IQ and should be a great fit in our program."
A member of the Junior Tall Blacks, Clinton represented New Zealand at the 2017 FIBA U19 World Championships in Cairo, Egypt. He averaged 12.1 PPG, 5.0 RPG and 3.0 APG during the tournament. Clinton was named the Male Junior Player of the Year in New Zealand, honored with the annual Ambassadors Trophy. Clinton was named the Most Valuable Player at the 2016 FIBA U18 Oceania Championship and led the Junior Tall Blacks to a 5-0 record en route to capturing the Gold Medal. His second MVP award came at the Aon U19 National Championship.
Dan Fotu 6-7 Forward Auckland, New Zealand
"We are excited to have Dan join our program," stated Bennett. "He is a team first guy that brings toughness. Dan has great defensive ability which will allow him to defend multiple positions."
Dan was called up to the Tall Blacks National Team earlier this year, joining the team for their World Cup Qualifier against China and South Korea. Dan joined is older brother Isaac on the national team this past year. Dan represented New Zealand at the 2016 FIBA U18 Oceania Championships in Suva, Fiji. He averaged 7.5 PPG and 5.0 RPG during the championship as he led the Junior Tall Blacks to a Gold Medal. Dan captured back-to-back SAS Secondary Schools Basketball Nationals championship with Rangitoto College in 2015 and 2016, and led Rangitoto College to a runner-up finish in 2017.
Aaron Menzies 7-3 Center Manchester, England (Seattle University)
"Aaron is a proven center, who has played at a high level for three years," Bennett said. "We look forward to having Aaron join our program and feel he will fit in great with our system."
Menzies joins Saint Mary's as a graduate transfer from Seattle University, after playing the past three years in the Northwest. Menzies started at center for the past two seasons, averaging 11.3 points, 8.9 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game last year as Seattle went 20-14 on the season. Menzies was named Second Team All-WAC last season and was a member of the WAC All Defensive Team. He shot 60.9 percent from the field and set a school record with 79 blocks. Menzies finished ranked 15th in the nation in total blocks (79), 20th in blocks per game (2.3), 16th in offensive rebounds (118), 40th in total rebounds (302) and 43rd in rebounds per game (8.9). Before Seattle, Menzies played in his hometown of Manchester for the Manchester Magic Basketball Club for two seasons.
Alexander Mudronja 6-5 Guard Adelaide, Australia
"Alex is a big guard who can play both positions in the backcourt. He has great court vision and excels in pick and roll situations. He is a strong leader and we are excited to have him join our program," Bennett said.
Mudronja participated at the Next Generation Sunday at the NCAA Final Four this past year, representing the NBA Australia Academy. He competed against teams from Africa, China and Latin America, along with USA Basketball Junior National Select Team. Alexander was a member of the South Australia team that captured the U20 National Title. He was a member of Team Asia Pacific at the prestigious 2017 adidas Nations in Houston, Texas. Mudronja attended the Australian Centre of Excellence. Alex led the U20 Australian National Championships in Player Efficiency Ratings this past spring.
Matthias Tass 6-10 Forward/Center Tallin, Estonia
"Matthias is a versatile big man who is comfortable scoring on the block or facing up on the perimeter," said Bennett. "He has nice feet and hands, and has a high basketball IQ. We look forward to having him in our program."
Tass was named to the All-Tournament team while helping Estonia to a third-place finish at the 2017 FIBA U18 European Championship. He averaged 11.4 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 2.6 BPG and 2.5 APG during the tournament. Tass participated in the NBA's Basketball Without Borders Camp in Helsinki in September of 2016.
