MORAGA, Calif. — In an exhibition match against Bay Area foe San Jose State, the Gaels fell 1-0 on a sweltering hot evening in Moraga.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The lone goal of the game came in the 66th minute as the Spartans' junior Jamilecxth Becerra lofted a high shot across the box into the upper left corner to break the scoreless tie.

Saint Mary's outshot the Spartans in the contest 12-10 despite surrendering the goal. Junior forward Jaylen Crim paced the Gaels' offense with three shots while freshman newcomer Kaytlin Brinkman chipped in two as well.

The Gaels nearly forced a tie at the end of the match as Crim found a partial breakaway in the waning seconds before just missing with a shot over top of the net. Earlier in the first half, Saint Mary's had their best scoring opportunity as a scrum in the front of the net off a Kailana Kaeo corner kick gave the Gaels multiple shot opportunities. The San Jose defense managed to get bodies in front of each shot before eventually clearing to end the threat.

In total, 23 different Gaels took the pitch in the match including two goalkeepers in Maleah Milner and Sarah Sawatzky.

• "It was good for us to get that game in before they start to count. We played 23 players today and got to see several in a few different spots."
