MSOC | Gaels Face Two Pac-12 Teams This Week

Saint Mary's will play Stanford and Cal in exhibition games on the road this week.
STANFORD, Calif. — The Gaels will face two Bay Area teams this week in exhibition matches as they ramp up for non-conference play. Saint Mary's will travel to the West Bay tomorrow to take on Stanford before coming back east for another road contest against Cal.
SMC will look to build on their 6-6-5 record from last season with a relatively young team. The Gaels have 11 new freshmen as well as two transfers and a lone senior in Stephen Dougherty. Saint Mary's looks to continue their strong play that they finished the season with as the team is undefeated (2-0-2) in their last four contests.
The Gaels return their top four scorers from last year including Jake Rudel who led all Saint Mary's players with six goals and 13 points. Remi Prieur will begin his redshirt junior season after leading the team in 2017 with nine starts in goal and a 1.12 goals against average.
ABOUT STANFORD
Stanford comes into the season as the No. 1 team in the nation and are three-time reigning national champions. The Cardinal went 19-2-2 in 2017 and were 10-1-2 in their home stadium.
Stanford lost their top scorer, Foster Langsdorf, and starting keeper, Nico Corti, this spring to graduation and have a total of 10 freshman between newcomers and redshirts. The last time Stanford and Saint Mary's met in 2016 the two teams tied 2-2 in Stanford.
ABOUT CAL
The Golden Bears roll into 2018 after posting an 11-7 record in the previous season including a 6-4 showing in Pac-12 play. Cal advanced to the NCAA Tournament but had their season cut short in the first round by San Francisco with a 2-1 loss in Berkeley.
Cal will boast five seniors on their roster this season and return their leading scorer, Shinya Kadono. Saint Mary's and Cal last met in 2016 and also ended in a 2-2 draw.
