8/26/2018 6:55:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Anders Engebretsen scored two more goals on Sunday to give Saint Mary's a 2-0 win against Detroit Mercy.
MORAGA, Calif. — For the second straight game, Saint Mary's Anders Engebretsen provided fire power on offense and two goals to lead the Gaels to a 2-0 victory over Detroit Mercy on Sunday. Saint Mary's improved to 2-0 on the season while the Titans fell to 0-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, Engebretsen got the scoring started for the Gaels just minutes into the second half. Saint Mary's took the 1-0 lead as Engebretsen ran up on Jakub Svehlik's cross through the box and deposited it into the back of the net for his third goal of the season. Engebretsen led all players in the match with seven shots in his 80 minutes of action.
Engebretsen and Svehlik teamed up once again in the 58th minute in a similar fashion to double the Gaels' lead. Svehlik beat his defender on the left side and sent a cross to the top of the box where a sliding Engebretsen got his foot on the ball for his second score of the match.
On defense, Remi Prieur and the Gaels' backline recorded their second clean sheet of the weekend as the team limited Detroit Mercy to only seven shots and Prieur was forced to make just three saves. Saint Mary's also surrendered only two corner kicks the Titans to limit time spent in their own half.
The Gaels were strong on both sides of the ball as they fired off 13 shots at the Titans' keeper while their stingy defense kept UDM at bay. The two teams combined for 35 fouls in the physical match.

THOUGHTS FROM ADAM COOPER
- "I thought we played well today. We stuck with our game plan and were intelligent on both sides of the ball. UDM is a tough team to break down and I thought we did well to create scoring opportunities today. It was a good, hard-fought, gritty shutout win for our guys."
