MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's men's soccer team came from behind yet again on Saturday, scoring a goal in the 39th minute off the head of sophomore forward Henry Beatty to earn a 1-1 draw against San Francisco in the Gaels' West Coast Conference opener.

The Gaels have now pushed their unbeaten streak to five games for the longest since 2023. They will look for their first conference victory on the road next week as they gear up to take on Portland and Seattle U in a two-match week in the Pacific Northwest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

San Francisco has been an emerging threat in the WCC over the last several years and got off to a quick start with the opening goal in the ninth minute. The lead nearly lasted until the halftime whistle but the Gaels began to settle in and eventually found the back of the net in the 39th minute off a long set piece from midfield. Freshman center back Eemil Laamanen sent the free kick deep into the box where Henry Beatty lunged into a header that bounced into the opposite corner of the net for his second goal of the season. The goal merely came out of nowhere as the original location of the free kick was beyond the midway point in the Gaels' own defensive half. Laamanen would go on to log another 90-minute match as the Finland native got credit for his first collegiate assist.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tommy Davis got his name called on Saturday for just his third start of the season and fourth of his SMC career. Davis finished the match with just two saves but had several crucial catches and clearances outside of the box to prevent dangerous scoring opportunities for the Dons. The match featured several video reviews including a potential handball in the box against the Gaels in the second half that was eventually upheld and denied. The Gaels drew a foul just outside the 18-yard box in the closing seconds for one last chance but the clock was unable to be stopped in time by the center official, allowing the game to go final and end in a 1-1 draw.

Seven different field players never left the pitch for the Gaels including 90-minute efforts from Laamanen and fellow freshman center back Max Owusu-Antwi who were both solid all match long. Andre Insalaco led the Gaels with a pair of shot attempts while Beatty finished with a goal and 40 minutes of action off the bench. Head coach Adam Cooper and his squad have found a nice rhythm as of late with now five straight matches unbeaten dating back to September 7.
