MSOC | Gaels, Prieur Shutout Marist to Remain Undefeated

Saint Mary's prevailed Friday evening as they blanked the Red Foxes' offense for their third win of the season.

MORAGA, Calif. — In the first career meeting between the two teams, Remi Prieur and Saint Mary's shutout Marist to improve to 3-0 on the season. With the win, the Gaels are off to their best start in program history and it is the first time they have begun a season with three shutouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The redshirt-junior Prieur made seven saves in the game for his third clean sheet of the season against a 18-shot flurry from the Red Foxes (0-2). Prieur's third shutout of the season already nearly matches his total of four from last season.

Jake Rudel scored the first goal of the game as he volleyed the ball over the goalie's head off a through ball from Sebastian Schacht in the 13th minute. The junior forward's goal was his first of the season after he led the team last season with six.

Lucas Andrews doubled the lead for the Gaels when he scored on a header in the 73rd minute of the game. Andrews made the most of his time off the bench as he took two shots during 29 minutes of play.

The Gaels' defense was able to mitigate an 8-4 corner kick advantage for Marist in the contest by blocking multiple shots and keeping the Red Foxes from getting quality scoring chances throughout the game. SMC's defense tightened up significantly in the second half as they limited Marist to only five shots after surrendering 13 in the opening half.

THOUGHTS FROM ADAM COOPER
  • "Today, the boys found a way to win and that is what's important. Marist caused us problems in the first half and I thought the guys did a good job to regroup at halftime and play a solid second half."
  • "It was a good learning experience for us and will make us stronger as we prepare for San Jose State."

QUICK FACTS
  • Schacht notched his first career points as a Gael with two assists in the match.
  • Anders Engebretsen and Stephen Dougherty led the Gaels with three shots a piece.
  • Saint Mary's needed to use only three substitutes during the match.
  • Prieur made five of his seven saves in the first half.
