MSOC | No. 17 Gaels Win in Stunning Fashion Against UCSB

Saint Mary's played a strongly defensive match against UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday, but were able to seal the deal in the 108th minute and win the match 1-0

MORAGA, Calif. — The No. 17 Gaels played an exciting match on Wednesday evening against UC Santa Barbara, managing to pull it out in the second overtime period and win 1-0. The Gaels kept the Gauchos on their toes, and eventually won the match in the 108th minute to ascend to 8-0 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gaels sealed the match on a goal in the 108th minute by Jakub Svehlik with assists from Anders Engebretsen and Filippo Zattarin. With time winding down, Svehlik was able to knock a shot through the Gaucho goalie and trickle his shot over the line.

The first half of action was fast paced as Saint Mary's and UC Santa Barbara went back and forth. The Gaels collected four shots, coming from Svehlik, Engebretsen, and Jake Rude, while the Gauchos took five.

Goalie Remi Prieur had a pivotal save in the first half during the 30th minute of play. UCSB's Carter Clemmensen rocketed a shot toward the back right corner but Prieur was able to trap the ball and keep the match even at 0-0.

The Gaels applied offensive pressure in the second half after playing a strong, defensive first half. The Gaels went on the attack with 12 shots and four shots on goal during the period, but the Gauchos managed to fend off the attempts and take the scoreless match into overtime.

Overtime began in exciting fashion as Lucas Andrews took control of a breakaway ball and made a shot on goal at the beginning of the 96th minute. The attempt was close but ended in a collision between Andrews and UCSB goalie Ben Roach with the ball trickling out of bounds.
