The Gaels are in fifth place out of 16 teams and are only two strokes back of second place after Day 1 in Tucson.
TUCSON, Ariz. — In their first tournament in nearly three months, the Gaels pulled together a strong all-around performance to finish fifth after the first two rounds at the Arizona Intercollegiate and sit just two strokes away from second place.
THE LEADERBOARD
Ethan Farnam led the Gaels with a 2-under first round and 4-under second round to end t-7th heading into the final day. The sophomore had great success on the back-9 of each round, combining for a 5-under score on those holes.
Ethan Ashbrook was the second best performer for Saint Mary's going 2-under on the day to tie for 21st. Following just one stroke behind were Michael Slesinski and and Blake Hathcoat who ended their day 1-under.
The Gaels combined for a 14-under total and are fifth in the 16-team field. No. 11 Arizona State leads all groups at 21 below par and is currently five strokes ahead of second place and host, Arizona.
Chandler Phillips from Texas A&M holds the individual lead after shooting an 8-under middle round to wrap up the day's action at 12-under. He is three strokes ahead of Chun An Yu of Arizona State in second and five strokes ahead of four more competitors all tied for third.

- Slesinski shot 5-under on the front-9 of the first round and had two more birdies on the back-9.
- Farnam shot a combined 5-under on holes 16-18 between both rounds.
- Ashbrook battled back in the second round and birdied the last three holes on the back-9.
- All five Gaels birdied the 593 yard par 5 8th during the day.
- Saint Mary's had 41 birdies on the first day, only one behind the leaders UCLA and Arizona.
