MORAGA, Calif. — Conference play is underway as competition heats up this week for the Gaels with matches against the San Diego Toreros on Thursday and the BYU Cougars on Saturday.

SCOUTING REPORT
Saint Mary's has an 8-6 overall record this season, is 1-2 in the WCC, and is currently ranked 41st in the RPI Poll behind BYU (37) and Gonzaga (11). The Gaels are 13th in the nation and first in the conference in field goal percentage (47.7) while also leading the WCC in defensive rebounds (29.6 avg/G), and assists (17.4 avg/G). Saint Mary's is also ranked 10th in the nation and first in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage (38.9).

Senior Megan McKay came up big for the Gaels last week as she averaged 18.3 points per game, 7.7 rebounds, and shot 61.3% from the field. She recorded a season-high, 29 points in the game against Gonzaga and 18 points versus Portland. McKay currently leads the team with a shooting percentage of 55.2%.

There are four Gaels that are averaging over 10 points per game this season including Sydney Raggio (11.9), McKay (11.4), Emily Codding (10.8), and Sam Simons (10.2). Simons is close behind McKay for second-best shooting percentage on the team (53.3%) and holds the top spot for 3-point field goal percentage (45.2%).

SAN DIEGO
The Toreros have had a steady season so far with a record of 8-7, but have struggled in WCC competition with a 1-3 record. San Diego is coming off of two losses against LMU and Pepperdine last week after winning their first WCC matchup versus Santa Clara. Thursday's game will be the first of two road games for the Toreros, who have a road record of 2-4 this season.

Junior Patricia Brossmann is leading the San Diego squad with a shooting percentage of .530, an average of 12.2 points and 7.9 rebounds per game, along with 25 steals. She has started every game for the Toreros this season and is ranked first in the conference for offensive rebounds (3.3 per game) and fourth for overall rebounding.

BYU
BYU has posted a 12-3 record so far this season and is currently ranked 38th in the RPI poll and second in the conference behind Gonzaga. The Cougars are on a six-game winning streak and have not dropped a game since December 8 against Utah, while the only other losses for BYU came against Southern Utah (Nov. 27) and Cal (Nov. 13). The Gaels hold a 9-8 all-time advantage over the Cougars, winning three of the last four meetings over the years.

Leading the Cougars offense is Shaylee Gonzales who is shooting .473 from the field and .370 from the three-point line with an average of 17.1 points per game, which has her ranked second in the WCC in scoring. She also holds the most rebounds on the team and is second among her teammates in steals (33) and assists (63).
