MSOC | No. 9 Gaels Soundly Defeat No. 16 San Diego in Big Conference Matchup

Saint Mary's easily took down San Diego 3-0 on Sunday to remain unbeaten in conference play.

MORAGA, Calif. — No. 9 Saint Mary's excelled under pressure on Sunday as they took down No. 16 San Diego with ease in a 3-0 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
James Person got the Gaels on the board early on Sunday as he scored the first goal of the match in the 12th minute, which was good for his first goal of the season. Valentin Kurz set up the goal as he sent the ball to Person off a corner kick from Filippo Zattarin which gave Person the go-ahead to tap the ball into the left side of the net.

Joseph Restani tallied his ninth goal of the season when he recorded a spin-o-rama goal between the goalies' legs in the 32nd minute to bring the Saint Mary's' lead to 2-0. Restani and three other Gaels collected two shots apiece in the first half of action.

The Gaels' offense continued to roll as Lucas Andrews capitalized on a mistake by a Torero defender to score an open-net goal in the 43rd minute. The goal for the junior was his third of the year.

Both teams were highly defensive in the second half as neither put up a goal. Torero Miguel Berry was subdued on the offensive end as the Gaels' strong defense prevented the San Diego standout from taking a single shot. Prior to the contest, Berry led the West Coast Conference in shots (45) and ranked tied for first alongside Anders Engebretsen in total goals (10) and game-winning goals (4).

The win for the Gaels' is good for their seventh clean sheet of the season. Goalkeeper Remi Prieur was only forced to make four saves during the matchup.

THOUGHTS FROM ADAM COOPER
  • "That was a great three points today. San Diego is very good and I thought we put in a solid 90 minute shift today to keep control of the game and get the win."
UP NEXT: SAN FRANCISCO
  • The Gaels will remain in the Bay Area next week as they will travel to San Francisco on Saturday to face off against the Dons at 7 p.m.
