The Gaels are now 11-1 this season and 2-0 in the conference after soldily beating No. 16 San Diego 3-0 last weekend. James Person scored the game-winning goal in Saint Mary's 3-0 win over No. 16 San Diego. His tally came in the 12th minute off a corner kick as he tapped in a pass by the left post to give the Gaels the only goal they would need in the match. It was good for Person's first goal of the season and the first goal of his career at Saint Mary's.Â
Person's was named WCC Player of the week and it is the third time this season that a Gael has been honored with the award, as senior Anders Engebretsen has won it twice already. He is also just the third sophomore to be awarded Player of the Week this year.
The sophomore also anchored the defensive back line as Saint Mary's held San Diego to only nine shots and four shots on goal in the win. Miguel Berry, the Toreros top scoring option and WCC co-leader in goals scored, didn't manage a single shot attempt in the match. The win for the Gaels' is also their seventh clean sheet of the season and their third in the last four matches. Saint Mary's is currently on a four-game win streak since September 29 and over the course of the last four matches, the team has outscored their opponents 14-1.
