VB | Gaels Can't Upset No. 11 Cougs on the Road

PROVO, Utah — Saint Mary's put forth a strong effort against the No. 11 Cougars on Halloween night but ultimately fell to the conference's top team in straight sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • SET ONE | The Gaels didn't budge early in the first set and halfway through only trailed by one point, 11-10. BYU would quickly bust the set open however as they took 12 of the next 14 points to take a commanding 23-12 lead. The Gaels strung a few points together towards the end of the set but would eventually fall, 25-15. SMC had four kills in the opening set and their lone ace of the match.

  • SET TWO | BYU got started with a 3-0 lead in the second set and continued to separate with multiple runs of consecutive points for a 25-11 decision. The Cougars had three different 3-point rallies and would also take the final five points of the set. Saint Mary's had their most kills and fewest errors for any set of the match with six each.

  • SET THREE | Another quick start from BYU had them up early 4-0 before they won 12 of the next 14 points to find themselves leading 16-4. The Gaels showed resilience as both teams exchanged points after and then SMC strung together four straight points partially thanks to a block by Aubrey Pitts and Elena Baka as well as a kill from Baka. An attack error by the Gaels would end the set and the match at 25-13.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • 26: Baka had 26 attacks in the match, most of any player.
